BROMELAIN is a proteolytic enzyme derived from the pineapple stem. The broad substrate specificity of BROMELAIN enables the enzyme to efficiently hydrolyze most soluble proteins. This enzyme exhibits excellent performance on both animal and vegetable proteins. Although amino acids are liberated during hydrolysis, the reaction does not necessarily proceed to completion.

Bromelain is probably important as an anti-inflammatory enzyme useful in posttraumatic responses and swelling and after surgery. It is also part of an antiaging program as it reduces tissue irritation. This proteolytic enzyme of pineapple also has several actions that make it helpful in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease. It reduces platelet aggregation, arterial plaqueing, and clot formation 400 - 1,000 mg. daily has been shown to reduce the symptoms of angina pectoris. Bromelain's most popular use has been to reduce joint inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis. The ranges for bromelain's anti-inflammatory effects appear to be from 500 - 2,000 mg. daily, usually taken in two doses. More research is needed to clearly evaluate the potential medical uses of this enzyme as well as those secreted by the pancreas itself.

Bromelain is an anti-inflammatory agent and for this reason is helpful in healing minor injuries, particularly sprains and strains, muscle injuries, and the pain, swelling, and tenderness that accompany sports injuries.

Also as a result of its anti-inflammatory effect, bromelain has been found to dramatically reduce postoperative swelling in controlled human research.6 Double blind research has found bromelain effective in reducing swelling, bruising,7 and pain for women having minor surgery after giving birth (episiotomy).

Some of the evidence supporting bromelain in the treatment of sinusitis comes from double blind research.

In one double blind study, twenty-eight individuals with a UTI received antibiotics plus either bromelain or a placebo. Signs of infection resolved in all of those who received bromelain, compared with only 46% of those given placebo

Bromelain is a natural blood thinner because it prevents excessive blood platelet stickiness.
